DKs: so you want to build a tanking set? READ THIS.

Don’t try to tank heroics in your DPS gear.

I know this seems like a dumb, obvious statement, but seriously, don’t do it!

I was queuing up for a couple random heroics this evening after hubby went to bed as I had insomnia and ended up in a Utgarde Keep run.  I glance around and can’t tell who’s tanking by health, which is a bad sign, mind you.  I realize that the 24k DK is listed as the tank.  I glance at his gear – NO defense gear.  AT all.  None.

Okay, so maybe he was dps in the last one and hasn’t swapped yet.  “Who’s tanking?”

24k DK: Me.

I watch and wait for the inevitable gear swap, which never comes.

Me: “Where’s your tanking gear?”

24k DK: “I have it on”

I glance again, hoping I missed something.  Okay, he slapped on the 226 badge defense necklace… and that was it.

Random Hunter: “All DPS gear”

24k DK: “Well I’m trying to build a tanking set, you know, with badges?” [this is essentially what he said – cleaned up a bit from errors].

Me: “You can’t tank without any defense gear”.

Seriously, I don’t mind undergeared tanks.  We NEED more tanks out there!  So I have people to heal in heroics.  I don’t mind someone in blues, someone who’s at the 535 “heroics cap” or someone a bit squishy because their gear isn’t ideal – not in a run of the mill heroic.  If we can make it through, we’re fine.  But I was not going to put up with an “I’m a DK, I’m so leet I don’t need defense gear” tank.  I don’t need that stress – especially not late at night and after a 25 man raid [where I tanked on my DK mind you].

Me: “I’m not healing you.”

24k DK: Whatever *begins pulling*

Me: *sits down right at the entrance*  [Random hunter and pally also stay with me.  Random druid goes with him to dps].

He manages the first pull with about 3k health left, fully expecting my tier 9 epiced out priest to come to his rescue.  It took everything I had not to do it because it’s been ingrained in me since I started healing oh what 3 months ago?  But seriously, I’m NOT up for that stress.

Second pull – he pulls the first major group with 3k health, and the inevitable happens of course.  He dies.

24k DK: UR GAY!!!!!! *leaves group*

DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT EVER do that to a group people!  If you want to build a tank set and you don’t have an adequate one – go dps for the badges.

Raid leader and Tank. Also is an altoholic

    1. We tried vote kicking him but it wouldn’t let us 😦 Plus he was party leader. But yeah, tis a blessing and a curse.

  1. I’ve heard of people pretending to be tanks so they can skip the queue.

Thankfully, the only time I’ve encountered that so far was in a lower level instance where it didn’t really matter.

  2. haha

Sadly, I am beginning to believe the wonderful LFG system has done the inevitable…allowed people to be the jackasses that they couldn’t be on their own server.

People that weren’t able to pug before because everyone on their home server knew better then to group with them, had already put them on ignore or just didn’t invite them. Now those people can be turned loose on the otherwise unknowing players in LFG.

I agree there needs to be more tanks out there. My queue time as a tank is never over 10 seconds for randoms, that’s sad. But if you want to tank, it takes almost nothing to get the 80 level blue defense gear crafted for you and it will get you defense capped for heroics.

*sigh* Off my soap box now!

  3. So along the lines of your post I’ve got a DK tanking question, if you wouldn’t mind me hijacking the comments real quick 🙂

My friend has a DK alt, did the dps thing trying to get a tank set, and got his defense up to 518. I am a ToC25 geared healer, and convinced him to tank some heroics with me as his healer.

Was this a bad idea? We did OK – UK no problem, VH wiped to Zevoxx(?) twice and called it because it was late, but that was more overall party damage, not so much squishy tank that was causing me trouble.

Anyway, really just looking for your thoughts on whether or not it is OK to tank with less than the def cap, if you bring your own personal healer?

    1. It isn’t something I would do myself, or would recommend, but if you’re a tank/healer pair and you want to give it a go, go for it. There’s also a world of difference between 518 defense and 424 defense [which is what the guy had in the example above].

I would advise strongly though that he get defense capped as soon as he can. Badge gear/crafted gear and enchants can help you get there. And I believe there’s even a defense pot you can use as well.

  4. Good post, I recently built a DK tank set, and I didn’t dare go in there with less than 28k, and well over def cap (super easy for DKs because of the runeforge for 25 (26 if dual wield) def SKILL (thats right skill, not rating).. it’s retardedly easy to get def cap for DKs. And yes, I built my tank set as DPS, not as a tank…
I have a healer as well, you weren’t wrong, if they had 24k and they’re new, fine, as long as their at least very close to the def cap. 1 or 2 crits in a run can be made up with by planned over healing, it shouldn’t break the run. Making no effort for the cap before queuing as a tank is shameful.

  5. i totally Agree, i have an 80 tank DK. and i seem to be doing fine as a DW frost tank…..

trick for most Aggro as a DW frost tank, is equip 2 dps weapons on both hands, and use the enchant for +26 defense.

i would also work on getting this gear here:

    Summary
This set will get you to 705 total Defense Rating including enchants, or a total of 543 defense skill. 540 is the magic number for uncritable, so this gives a little leeway in terms of upgrading your gear as you progress through raid content.

this will help you guys get defense capped easily. and will help alot of people out there live and have leet tanks…… reason i spent about 1 hour on this gear set, is so no noob DK’s can go and tank instances with their God D%#*& dps gear.

you gotta love this, cause after you gear up with these you can skip the T-9 set and try to go for T-9.5, or even T-10 tanking gear.

focus more on defense and stamina. and the rest is up to you, i aint gunna tell you whats the best proffessions for tanking but i would H-I-G-H-L-Y
    reccommend ( Skinning * +40 Crit bonus *, and Mining * +60 stam *

these prove well worth it for me. plus they also make me verry good money, i can pull off about 1k gold / day from skinning, and about 3k gold on mining if i find the Titanium deposits.

    Hope this helps.
